Welcome, Cody Gould!

IMGP0738Coby Gould is the newest face you’ll see at the Perk.  He will help us out part-time while he pursues his volunteer interests in the community.  Coby is a Denver native and grew up not too far from Wash Perk.  He is a food activist, facilitator, environmental educator and permaculturalist.  He graduated from The University of Colorado, Boulder with a Degree in Philosophy and Peace and Conflict studies. He attended a course on Multiculturalism and Social Change in Cape Town, South Africa and did organic farming work in both India and Ireland.

Coby is particularly interested in work related to food, community food security, and the growing and distribution of sustainable foods.  He has spent the past year in Boston working with an Environmental Justice Education non-profit teaching a Food Justice course for high school youth and has also worked for many years with Seeking Common Ground a local non-profit that brings together Israeli, Palestinian and American youth for dialogue and peacebuilding.  Currently, Coby is volunteering for The Wild Green Yonder, a permaculture and green design collective working to bring agriculture back into the city!
Aside from food issues, Coby is also into trumpet and base guitar, mountain biking and camping, and building fantastic community!  Welcome, Coby!!!

Kelly at Peace Rally and Austin celebrates Nerd Day at South High!

IMGP0639 Our very own aspiring superstar, Kelly O’Laughlin attended a peace rally yesterday that marked the anniversary of the onset of major conflict in Afghanistan.  She was invited to come and recite her lines from her current role in “Afghanistan in the Age of Flowers”, playing every Friday night through October at The Mercury Cafe.  There will be a special performance on Halloween night.  tickets are $10.  Go Kelly!

IMGP0643IMGP0641 Yesterday was also Nerd Day at South, and this is how Austin showed up at our staff meeting last night.  We all love the glasses! :)

Perk Peeps!

WELCOME, ERIN SHAW!

IMGP0576Erin is from Spokane, WA and she is entering her third year at DU.  She is working toward her BA in International Studies.  She’s been a Resident Assistant on campus, a barista, and has contributed to lots of volunteer projects.  We are so happy to have her join us, and look forward to her sticking around!!!

WELCOME KELLY AND ZOE!

Zoe Leanza will be joining us to help out at the register and with bussing on busy weekends.  This is Zoe’s first job! Zoe’s interests and talents include: creative writing, photography, speech, squash, violin, rock-climbing, scrabble and debate!  No wonder there hasn’t been time for a job!  Zoe is being bombarded with lots of new information, but seems to handle it with ease and a great sense of humor.  Happy to have you, Zoe!  Hang in there! :)

IMGP0236Kelly O’Laughlin also joined us last week to patch up the hole left by Jennie’s departure to Uganda!  Kelly has a myriad of skills and experiences, including past barista experience at The Human Bean in Greeley, CO.  Kelly has been an office manager, Yoga Instructor, Substitute Teacher, and Zero Waste Co-ordinator in Telluride.  She currently continues her profession as an Acting Coach and Actor, and hopes to pursue her graduate degree abroad next Fall.   We’ll be lucky to have her until she gets word of acceptance in a program.  Her fun, friendly and fast learning way will be a pleasure to enjoy around the Perk.

Welcome, ladies!

Goodbye for now, Jennie… and NEW FALL HOURS

[rachel.jpg]

Well, we’ve been in denial long enough…. but today is Jennie’s last day.  She heads back to Ohio to visit family later this week, then it’s back to Uganda and her mission with Come, Let’s Dance! Right now, Jennie is committed until December, so hopefully we will see her again over the holidays.

Jennie, you are an exceptional woman, and we all will miss you so very much.  Your kindness, integrity, silliness and competence are qualities that we admire and have enjoyed being around….Safe travels.  We love you!

Good Luck, Lara!

Lara with her dad last weekendThis is Lara making a drink for her dad last weekend.  Lara has decided to join Bethany and to move forward using her degree in Marketing and Design.  We will, without a doubt, miss her cheery presence and wonderful disposition around the shop.  Will Teri ever get used to these “way too brief, but great” employee experiences?????  Good luck, Lara…. we will all miss you here!
