What's Happening at the Perk this week?

The first thing happening this week is the Organizing for America, HD3 West Side Neighborhood Team Meeting on Sunday, August 2 from 7:00pm – 8:30pm
PledgeProject

Then, on Saturday August 8, we’ve got the  Not For Sale Event from 1pm – 5pm

Join us for an Modern Day Slavery Awareness Event www.notforsalecampaign.org

The Not for Sale Campaign combines technology, intellectual capital, abolitionist groups and a growing network of individuals joined together to end slavery in our lifetime. Igniting and aiding this comprehensive response is the Not For Sale Campaign’s purpose. Our collective challenge is simple, stand with those who are enslaved, work together to free them, and empower them in their freedom to break the cycle of vulnerability.
If other items come up during the week we’ll be sure to post and inform you. :)

Engineers Without Borders, Denver meeting

A segment of the Denver Chapter EWB will be meeting at Wash Perk tonight at 7pm.  As usual, all who are interested are welcome to come and find out about the great work this group continues to to do all over the world.

Welcome home, Craig Wolf!!

DSC01382-3After completing his 4th tour of duty in Iraq, Lt. Colonel Craig Wolf returned to the hood and his family on Saturday night.  Craig is an F-16 pilot and flight instructor in the Colorado Air  National Guard.  He and his wife Lisa also happen to be co-owners of the Iyengar Yoga Center in our neighborhood (770 South Broadway).  We love that our pilots are staying limber…

Welcome home, Craig. Thank you to all your neighbors on Corona St. that welcomed you back with yellow ribbons.  Just reminds us all of the continued personal sacrifice that is asked of our service men and women.

Welcome, Sharon!

IMGP8584 Welcome, Sharon!  Or maybe it’s welcome back….  Sharon is our newest face at the shop. She was actually the original barista that came to our shop pre-open to train all of us on our equipment.  Sharon is an artist and a skilled barista, as well as a very hard worker!  She will also be the manager of the art and photography that you will see up on our walls.  We are so happy to have Sharon join us.  She will be here at least until Sept., maybe longer??? :)

While Joe and Henry Fowler were inspecting Wash Perk’s planter garden, Joe spotted a cucumber that was way overdue to be picked!!!  Hopefully, they are all still enjoying this first harvest at home on their salad plates!  Thank you, Fowler family for your support! :)

After many requests, we now have Italian Sodas!  $2.35/16 oz. and $2.80/24 oz.

Good Luck, Lara!

Lara with her dad last weekendThis is Lara making a drink for her dad last weekend.  Lara has decided to join Bethany and to move forward using her degree in Marketing and Design.  We will, without a doubt, miss her cheery presence and wonderful disposition around the shop.  Will Teri ever get used to these “way too brief, but great” employee experiences?????  Good luck, Lara…. we will all miss you here!

WWPMA and Women Wanderers on Wednesday, July 22nd

The newly organized West Washington Park Merchants Association will meet at the shop at 7am on Wednesday. All members receive a 20% discount off their bill.  This meeting we hope to firm up our values and mission statement.  We will be led by the fearless Sandi Segal, who took the initiative and has done so much of the footwork for the Association.  Thank you, Sandi!

The Women Wanderers Meetup Group will meet at the shop at 7 pm on Wednesday night.  This is a travel discussion group led by Betsy Hedberg.   Check out  http://www.meetup.com/women-wanderers to see if it’s a good fit for you, and to join (group membership and reservation required).

Goodbye, "B"

IMGP9972

Bethany Applegate, aka “B”, came to the Perk 10 months ago just after moving here from Michigan… She has been the steady and quiet competence behind the scenes, helping Teri keep her sanity as the shop has continued to grow.  Well, she’s landed a really wonderful job with a small local company that will allow her to use her degree in graphic design.  She is so excited and we are happy for her as she embarks on this promising opportunity.  We hope to still see her around, sipping lattes and occassionaly filling in behind the bar!   We will miss her very much… Good luck, B!!!

A little bit more info on BAD and what they’re up to…
BAD hosts First Friday – the LARGEST monthly women’s party in the US with more than 1500 women every month. BAD is excited to have a team in the fabulous All Women’s Bike Ride – the Venus de Miles on Sunday August 30th 2009. It’s a RIDE not a race and you can join if you can ride a bike. The ride will be in Longmont and there will be a fabulous festival following the ride. BAD will have their own jerseys and all the proceeds will benefit Greenhouse Scholars. For the next several weeks, they will be hosting social gatherings to “pump up the volume” on the ride. Please check them out. The web site for the ride is www.venusdemiles.com.

Friends and Neighbors of Washington Park

Check out the FANS of Washington Park website if you haven’t already.  It’s got great information about events and runs at the park, issues related to park, and how we can all get involved in helping to maintain and improve this gift.  I know that we feel lucky every day to live here.  We say it each day when we walk in the park.  It’s both vibrant and relaxing, integrated and welcoming, and so well cared for.  We just became members of FANS, as I wasn’t familiar with the group until recently.

Check out the Snapping Turtle laying eggs at the park! l
